Warm gatherings

The idea of time travel is as old as civilization and the concept of time itself. Before the Coffee Gets Cold takes us on a journey to a little hidden Tokyo café where, for more than a hundred years, its customers have been offered a chance of going back to the past. All they need is a freshly brewed cup of coffee, and picking the right spot to sit.

Staging Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s iconic original play in Cantonese, local director Harry Ng returns to CCM’s stage with a newly commissioned work telling a poignant story that raises a sharp question: who would you meet if you had one last chance to go back?
Adapted into a bestseller novel in 2015 and made into a movie a few years later, the play takes a peek into the lives of four people, each one with a very personal reason to travel to the past. Supervised by the original Japanese playwright himself, Harry’s version is interpreted by a strong homemade cast, including young actresses Flora Ho, Bernis Wong and Kate Leong, besides experienced actors Pak Hou Wong and Tabitha Lou, all specially picked to take the audience on a meditation on life’s regrets, reencounters and last chances.

Beautifully written, smartly conceived, this trip will resound with most of us and, like any venture into the past, does not come free of risks. Besides sitting on a particular seat when watching the play, as it happens on stage, no one should forget their way back to the present, and do it so, before the coffee gets cold.
