The ways of forbidden love

Opera and theatre lovers will be allured into a web of deceit and betrayal throughout this elegant musical drama exploring notions of identity and desire. Mr. Shi and his Lover engages the audience in a true story that once rocked the diplomatic realm. In an intimate portrayal of forgiveness and redemption, the play dissects the intense affair between a respected diplomat and a male opera performer. When one of them is revealed to be a spy, both men must face the prospect of mutual downfall.

From Macao to international acclaim

Staged by Macao’s prolific director Tam Chi Chun, this provocative tale penned by Wong Teng Chi departs from M. Butterfly’s classic narrative. The audience will be immersed into a contemporary, minimalist show set to the sound of music composed by Njo Kong Kie, inspired by Chinese opera and both Eastern and Western vintage pop. Performed in Mandarin with Chinese and English surtitles, featuring local actor Jordan Cheng and Canadian Derek Kwan, Mr. Shi and his Lover has won awards for Best New Musical, Best Actor and Supporting Actor in a Musical at the Toronto Theatre Critic Awards in 2018. Described as a show for the musically adventurous, slipping amongst strains of Beijing opera and its European equivalent, the performance hovers teasingly between a play and a recital, throwing in occasional references to other works. Co-produced by the Macao Experimental Theatre and Toronto’s Music Picnic, this is a fine example of the best Asian contemporary drama, amongst the best theatre ever conceived in town, now being staged for our pure delight.

“…expertly pulls the audience into the characters’ inner worlds” Robert Lepage

“…especially unusual is its radical deconstruction of storytelling” Now Magazine(CA)

“…carries the impact of a grand theatrical drama” Toronto Star(CA)
