Introduction

A downpour of contained love

Lifelong secrets will be unveiled in a Letter from an Unknown Woman, an intense, confessional work adapted from the well-known Austrian novella by Stefan Zweig, now put on display by two of the most outstanding figures of contemporary Chinese drama.

The play is devised by Meng Jinghui, dubbed the most influential theatre director in China and widely recognized for his adaptations of both classic and contemporary works. Having created over 40 pieces since the 1990s, this time the avant-garde director takes to centre stage Huang Xiangli, a usual collaborator and the country’s boldest monologue performer. For around two hours, alone on stage, Meng’s muse brings to life a vivid, incisive portrayal of a woman tormented by a lifetime passion for a man who was never aware of such wounded love.

Letting a striking multitude of expressions flow, conveying a cascade of feelings and thoughts, from inextricable sweetness, to hurt and torture, this performance is framed by cool visual effects in a geometric and minimalist three-dimensional setting. Bringing into full play Meng Jinghui’s unique creativity and scenic command, this exquisite production will immerse our audience into a fine contemporary galore.
