Introduction

Exuberant heritage

The China National Peking Opera Company is back in town for a grand display of tradition and performing excellence. This time it will delight us with two of the most popular Peking operatic pieces. Female Generals of the Yang Family, is a feudal revenge story set during the Song dynasty, telling us of a time when military women safeguarded their homeland after most of their men were killed in combat. The second piece, the lively A Right Royal Match, plunges the audience in a tale of intrigue and deception amid a territorial power struggle. Inspired on a chapter of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it depicts the moment Liu Bei, a historical character ruling over the ancient city of Jingzhou, crosses the river only to fall in a honey trap.

Revealing the whole diversity and development of traditional Chinese opera, these staged tales bring yet another opportunity for performing arts lovers to discover a combination of different theatre forms. Focusing on a mix of recitation, dance-acting and martial arts, Peking opera is much more than vocal virtuosity, with its impressive costumes, make-up and props taking an important role in the performances. The music is played live by a small orchestra, placed at the left side of a minimal set which allows actors and musicians a smoother interaction.

Founded in 1955 by the hand of the legendary Mei Lanfang, over the years the China National Peking Opera has brought together a lineup of fine artists, playwrights, directors, and composers from across the country to assemble a repertoire recognized both at home and abroad. So let’s immerse ourselves in a moment of poignant storytelling, taking us back to the roots of an exquisite legacy.
